Title Enhancing nutrient removal of agricultural and agro-industrial wastewater utilizing symbiotic microalgal co-cultivation systems to optimize sustainable resource recovery
Year 2024
Published
Abstract Agriculture and agro-industries are essential for global food security and sustainable development. However, the discharge of wastewater from these industries poses significant environmental challenges due to the presence of high levels of organic compounds and potential contaminants. Effective management strategies and advanced treatment technologies are needed to mitigate the negative impact of agricultural wastewater on ecosystems and human health. Microalgal-based wastewater treatment systems have emerged as a promising technology to mitigate environmental issues associated with wastewater treatment, including nutrient pollution and carbon emissions. These systems offer a sustainable approach by utilizing microalgal to efficiently convert waste materials into valuable resources, thereby promoting the concept of a circular economy. In recent years, researchers have been exploring the potential of utilizing co -cultivation of microalgae in wastewater treatment as a strategy to address challenges associated with microalgal monocultivation and harvesting. However, the co -cultivation of microalgae with certain species may lead to competition for nutrients and space, ultimately reducing the efficiency of wastewater treatment and the desired product productivity. Therefore, this review will thoroughly analyze the characteristics of agricultural and agro-industrial wastewater and explore the effectiveness of adopting symbiotic microalgal co -cultivation for the treatment of wastewater and its ability to produce valuable products. Furthermore, it examines the intricate dynamics between various species within this strategy and highlights both the obstacles and future possibilities of its implementation.
