Abstract Unresponsible plastic production and consumption are a major threat to the environment. Plastic valorization is introduced to create a circular economy to intervene in the utilization of plastic waste. Here we utilized expanded polystyrene waste as a functional coating for the cotton fabrics using spray coating methods. Polystyrene was dissolved in toluene and added with ZnO particle. The coating process is facile, and the chemicals are low-cost from the local market. The coated fabrics show a superhydrophobic surface. The highest water contact angle was shown by 3 layers of coated canvas cotton fabric with 15 s coating duration of 150.02 degrees, whereas the oil droplet was quickly absorbed by the fabric. The ZnO EPS coated canvas cotton fabric was used as a membrane separation for the oil-water mixture either in a continuous or batch system. The oil permeability was 7.63 g m(-2) s(-1) for 3 layers and 15 s coating duration. The continuous system of the membrane module (3 layers, 15 s coating duration) shows 77.14% high separation efficiency of the oil spill. As batch systems, the bottom side of the boat was covered with ZnO-EPS coated canvas cotton fabric (3 layers, 15 s coating duration) and then run across the oil spill. The boat separates the oil spill with a relatively high separation efficiency of 80.06%. This coated fabric made of EPS waste is promising for advanced materials and wastewater treatment.
