Abstract |
Landfill leachate contains a large number of complex and harmful components, which may cause scaling during pipe transportation. This study proposes a system dynamic (SD) approach by taking the leachate properties, pipe material performance and piping condition into account to model the scaling variation. An immersion experiment is designed by placing the typical HDPE pipe material into a dispensing leachate solution, to obtain the scaling parameters via necessary characterizations in order for SD simulation. The influence of control factors, such as calcium ion concentration, flow rate, temperature and surface roughness on the scaling is investigated. The simulation results show that the concentration of calcium ions plays a key role in the scaling formation, followed by the flow velocity, pipe surface roughness and temperature. The proposed model has a potential to predict the pipe blockage during leachate collection and transportation, which is expected to be a decision-making tool for clogging prevention and control. |
