Abstract The bottom-up approach in the smart and sustainable use of local forest resource on the local level is the only way towards circular economy by creating locally sustainable bioeconomy value chains based on cascading use of wood. Spajva basin is one of the largest coherent complexes of lowland pedunculate oak forests in Europe with 96% of the world-famous raw wood material of Slavonian oak. It covers 40.000 hectares in Vukovar-Srijem County (Croatia) and with Vojvodina (Srbija) part makes the total area of 51.592,92 hectares. In the local area exist biggest wood industry in Croatia Spaeva with more than 850 employees. The article represents a case study of cascading use of wood in Spaeva as a type of qualitative research. Starting from logs to veneer, furniture, doors, floors and energy products, a local resource is used in the smart and efficient way. Further recommendations will be investigated towards the more efficient use offorest resource for sustainable bioeconomy and circular economy on a local level.
