Title Developing the conceptual framework for the key performance indicators for sustainable wood waste supply chain

Abstract Wood is renewable, a carbon-capturing sustainable structural material where a large amount of wood waste is generated each year. Waste minimisation, recovering valuables and retaining values within the closed-loop supply chain is the key concept of a circular economy; however, a very small amount of waste wood is recovered and circulated in the present situation. Waste circularity pathways vary depending on the type of wood waste, the life cycle stages when they were produced, sustainability hotspots, and their key performance indicators in the supply chain. Research gaps exist about the interaction among the environmental and socio-economic hotspots involved in the waste wood handling and management supply chain and the key performance indicators which influence the sustainability potential in each life cycle stage. This research paper aims to develop a conceptual framework followed by a system dynamics model while identifying and mapping the wood waste type, their life cycle stage of handling and management, triple-bottom-line sustainability hotspots, and the key performance indicators for transitioning to the circular economy of wood waste handling and managing supply chain. The wood waste classifications have been harmonised first through reviewing the existing classification policies. Then the waste handling and management stages are analysed to identify the environmental and socio-economic hotspots. Then the system dynamics model was established via mapping the environmental and socio-economic hotspots and the type of wood wastes. As a result, this paper identified that the wood waste classification based on the manufacturing processes is most widely accepted. Then this paper also identifies 12 key performance indicators in the waste handling and management supply chain, and the system dynamics model indicates that KPIs largely influence wood waste handling and management policies.
