Title Gaps On Waste Management Education In Schools And Universities From Bucharest

Abstract Under the frame of ERASMUS+ program, in the project entitled 'Waste Education Initiative', the University of Agronomic Sciences and Veterinary Medicine of Bucharest (USAMVB) developed with EU partners a questionnaire aimed at highlighting how education is organised in the field of waste management. It has been addressed to local authorities (municipalities), waste contractors, primary schools, gymnasiums, high schools and to students and teaching staff from the University of Agronomic Sciences and Veterinary Medicine of Bucharest. From survey evaluation, the questionnaire reveals that waste management education is not part of the curricula and is conducted at the free initiative of involved actors: local authority, waste contractors, NGO and teachers. Each of these actors works independently. Moreover, pilot educational activities in schools depend on the initiative and the will of the teachers, without specific financial support. Local authorities and waste contractors provide educational material and activities only in a few schools and colleges, and not in the universities. Actual facts determine a crucial claim for basic education on waste management: waste hierarchy, prevention, separate collection, recycling and valorisation actions towards circular economy. About 70% from the pupils and students do not know about circular economy. Actually, the modern teaching and assessment methods related to waste management requires instead of individual homework, more educational practice and local initiatives with dedicated activities and active implication of all stakeholders. Therefore, more awareness of suitable topics and tools need to be addressed with adequate solutions proved by strong examples: Why is mandatory to overcome the huge quantities of waste and their effects on human and nature?
