Abstract Decarbonizing the energy system by integrating increasing shares of intermittent energy sources from solar and wind requires the development of demand response mechanisms. In the following, an approach is introduced on how energy flexibility can be considered as an operational target in the planning and optimization of manufacturing systems. For this purpose, an extension of the Logistic operating curves is introduced in order to quantitatively assess correlations between productivity and energy consumption, to provide energy flexibility, and to enable companies to evaluate their products' environmental impacts. For evaluation purposes, a case-study was conducted in the manufacturing industry. The results underline the necessity for decision makers in manufacturing to consider energy flexibility in their medium to long term strategic decisions. (C) 2019 The Authors.
