Abstract The current investigation is focused on the preparation of activated carbons from biomass waste such as cherry stones, walnut shells and mixture of both precursors in different ratio. Their application as a host matrix of zinc ferrite nanoparticles was studied. The effect of the activated carbon texture and surface characteristics on the state of the loaded zinc ferrite phase was investigated by Boehm method, XRD, nitrogen physisorption, Mossbauer spectroscopy and TG-TPR analysis. The catalytic properties of the obtained modifications were tested in methanol decomposition with a potential for hydrogen production. The results of the physicochemical analysis showed the formation of finely dispersed ZnFe2O4 phase, despite the peculiarities of the carbon support. The catalytic activity was higher for the walnut shell based materials, and was probably promoted by the facile development of mesoporous texture in them.
