Abstract Removal of organic dyes from water is of significance for a safe environment and human health. Adsorption of neutral red (NR) dye using a packaging waste commercially known as the shock-absorbing filler has been demonstrated through the batch technique. The material was characterized by FTIR, pH(ZPC), FESEM, powder XRD, and BET surface area measurement. FTIR and powder XRD suggest the presence of silicate functionalities, quartz along with some water of crystallization. BET surface area was evaluated to be 3.571 m(2) g(-1) with a pore volume of 0.00903 cc g(-1) and a pore radius of 1.8055 nm. Maximum Langmuir adsorption capacity was found to be 121.21 mg g(-1) at 328 K. Optimization of process parameters such as initial concentration, working pH, temperature, and contact time suggests that the adsorption stands best at neutral pH (7-8) and elevated temperature (328 K). Adsorption seems to be a combination of pseudo-second-order, second-order, and intra-particle diffusion kinetics. Langmuir isotherm model (R-2 = 0.967, q(e) = 121.21 mg g(-1)) stands best, suggesting a monolayer process. Up to 50% regeneration was achieved using methanol and can be reused for a couple of cycles. Wastewater containing NR was tested and found promising with 43.8% removal efficiency. The mechanism has been proposed to be a combination of electrostatic interaction through silicate moieties and weak hydrogen bonding via lattice water. This study demonstrates the practical utility of packaging fillers to be of great use in dye removal from water and wastewater.
