Abstract | The pilot concept REWE Green Farming, developed by the architects from acme and engineers from knippershelbig, describes a supermarket of the future - an architecture that restores our human connection to locally produced food and at the same time it makes the dimensions of sustainable construction visible by using timber as a main construction material. The production processes of food are made visible and celebrated for the user. An aquaponics farm is integrated into the market functions, with a fish farm located on a mezzanine floor and the cultivation of basil in a greenhouse on the roof of the market. The market is considered to be a prototype, with its flexible and modular construction principle being able to transfer to other site typologies. Simple and honest, this is how the structural design for the timber building presents itself. A spatial timber structure made of stacked glulam beams serves to carry the loads and at the same time becomes a defining element of the interior design and market identity. The form of the column heads and the internal flow of forces from the beam layers into the column construction were influenced by the controlled use of material properties and joining techniques, with the aim of taking the demands of use into account, architecture, feasibility and economy and focusing on the expressiveness of a resource-saving construction method. |
