Title Unlocking the hidden value of pods: A review of thermochemical conversion processes for biochar production
Year 2023
Published
Abstract Pods have great potential as a feedstock for producing biochar. However, there is still much to be discovered about the full potential of pods, and more research is needed to understand their conversion to biochar. This review explores the current state of research on thermochemical conversion techniques, including pyrolysis, gasification, torrefaction, and hydrothermal carbonization, for the conversion of pods into biochar. Cocoa pods have been found to be the most commonly used precursor for biochar synthesis, and pyrolysis is the most utilized technique for the production of pod-based biochar. The conversion of pods to biochar is affected by various variables, such as heating rate, temperature, conversion duration, and pressure. Pod-based biochar has been used in agriculture, environmental remediation, and composite development. Future research should explore the combination of techniques and optimization of conversion process parameters for specific pod feedstocks.
