Abstract Education plays a crucial role in promoting actions that mitigate climate change, enhancing understanding of the consequences of human actions on ecosystems and providing the knowledge, values and skills necessary for engineering students to act as agents of change. This article stems from documentary research aimed at reviewing Mechanical Engineering programs in Colombia, exploring their relationship and pertinence to environmental sustainability and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) No. 6, 7, 11 and 13. The methodological design aligns with the critical social paradigm, employing a qualitative approach through a descriptive and projective study. The study involves characterizing a sample of 15 Mechanical Engineering programs, analyzing the relevance of professional training concerning environmental sustainability. The survey conducted revealed that a significant portion of the existing educational offerings in Mechanical Engineering programs does not align with the objectives of sustainability. Consequently, updating curricula is proposed as an opportunity to reflect, make them more flexible, and renew them to address the current environmental needs of the planet.
