Title Post-treatment of food waste digestate towards land application: A review

Abstract With the fast-growing adoption of anaerobic digestion in food waste treatment, the appropriate disposal and utilization of digestate have become a prominent problem. Using digestate as a soil conditioner promotes the circular economy and the sustainable development of biogas production. Before the application of digestate, post treatment is necessary to reduce the volume and phytotoxicity, accelerate the stabilization, and conserve nutrients. In this paper, the properties of food waste digestate and the worldwide regulations on digestate for soil conditioning were summarized. The principles, mechanisms, and application prospects of the various post digestion treatment processes were reviewed and discussed, including dewatering, drying, and biological stabilization. Biodrying and hyperthermophilic composting (HTC) have great potential for accelerating digestate stabilization and reducing greenhouse gas emissions from digestate handling. Combined with chemical or biological approaches, biodrying and HTC processes could achieve a 27%e84% nitrogen fixation. Thus, biodrying and HTC are applicable in the post digestion stabilization of food waste digestate. Nonetheless, more attention could be paid to assure product quality via source collection management and process optimization. (c) 2021 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
