Title Oil palm-based nanocellulose for a sustainable future: Where are we now?
Year 2022
Published Journal Of Environmental Chemical Engineering, 10.0, 2
Abstract The palm oil industry is the largest contributor of biomass in Malaysia where vast amount of oil palm biomass waste is generated annually while only a small fraction is being converted into value-added products. The remaining is either burnt or left to decompose at the plantations, which will emit hazardous gases and often resulting in acute air pollution. Therefore, much effort has been invested by researchers for a more sustainable palm oil circular economy, in which the exploitation of lignocellulosic residues for nanomaterials production could be the golden answer. Nanocellulose may prove to be one of the most auspicious green materials for nanocomposite processing owing to its superb mechanical properties, abundance, renewability and biodegradability. This paper provides a comprehensive review of recent advancements regarding oil palm-based nanocellulose from its initial isolation, characterizations to the final applications. Ultimately, the challenges and opportunities for future research associated with the commercialization of nanocellulose-based materials are also thoroughly canvassed to open a new epoch in engineering advance nanomaterials from oil palm biomass for various industrial applications.
