Abstract The continuous progress of digital technology is having a profound impact on the course of sustainable development. Within this framework, the push towards digital transformation is anticipated to shape the advancement of green total factor productivity. Nevertheless, the precise effects and underlying mechanisms through which digitalization alters green total factor productivity remain an open question. Theoretically speaking, digitization has the potential to enhance green total factor productivity by facilitating transformative shifts in industrial structures and fostering innovation in green technologies. This study analyzes data from 280 cities in China, spanning from 2011 to 2019. The findings of this research indicate a significant and positive relationship between digitalization and green total factor productivity. To ensure the validity of this finding, extensive tests for both robustness and endogeneity were conducted, further confirming its reliability. Mechanistic investigations suggest that green technological innovation and industrial structural transformation serve as pivotal conduits through which digitalization enhances green total factor productivity. Further examination indicates that the influence of digitalization on green total factor productivity varies significantly during various stages of economic development, levels of digital advancement, city scale, and between central and peripheral urban areas. This research provides new perspectives and clarifies the diverse ways in which digitalization affects green total factor productivity.
