Abstract |
As Hong Kong seeks to strengthen its position as one of the global centres for green finance, opportunities in terms of financing decarbonisation efforts through energy transition also expand. Digital fintech instruments, such as peer-to-peer trading using blockchains, are among these emerging innovations. These financial instruments require innovations in the digital financialisation of energy transition. We dubbed this innovation "fintech (renewable energy) RE" to capture the blending of the three sectors of finance, digital technology, and renewable energy. Recognising that these sectors are traditionally siloed, we asked: who could be the actors in this emergent ecosystem? We respond to these questions by focusing on Hong Kong, a global financial centre envisaging to become an international centre of green finance, and conducting expert perception interviews to identify this normative actor/institution landscape of what can be called a fintech RE ecosystem. Our study found that this landscape will engage not only those in the three identified sectors but also require active involvement by the members of the investing public and regulators in government. |
