Abstract The implementation of green innovation in the automotive industry (IGIAI) has attracted attention of both decision-makers and researchers over the last few years. However, research has demonstrated that IGIAI faces several barriers. This paper aims to synthesize the existing literature that pertains on barriers to IGIAI. Using a systematic review method, this article seeks to advance knowledge by grouping all barriers into six blocks: barriers related to resources, to behaviors, to information, to technology, to laws and regulations and to organizational barriers. The article reveals the existence of some causal links between the groups of barriers and emphasizes that the dominant barriers are related to behaviors and resources. Moreover, some research gaps in the literature have been identified and presented. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
