Abstract Pollution is destroying the living condition for all the inhabitants of earth and considered as one of the most vital threat to earth. This study analyzes the long and short run nonlinear (u-shape or inverted u-shape) impact of urbanization, trade liberalization, economic growth, and technology on environmental pollution in African and Asian emerging economies. The study applies the STIRPAT model, while long and short run association among the variables are examined through panel cointegration and causality test. The study uses balanced panel data of seventeen African and Asian emerging economies from 1975 to 2018. Results show that inverted u-shape relationship exists between urbanization and environmental degradation, between economic growth and environmental degradation as well as between technology and environmental degradation, while u-shape relationship exists between trade openness and environmental degradation in African and Asian emerging economies in the long run. Long run causality runs from trade openness, urbanization, technology, and economic development to CO2 emissions, while short run causality exhibits that unidirectional causality moves from technology, economic growth and square of technology to CO2 emissions. Government has to establish environmental regulations for urbanization to maintain the population at optimum levels while, restrictions are required on economic growth and international trade towards green growth as well as government has to encourage the technological innovation to reduce the emissions.
