Title How sustainable business models and firm capabilities co-evolve to shape industrial symbiosis development: A validated theoretical framework

Abstract Practitioners and scholars increasingly recognize the importance of business model (hereafter, BM) innovation for sustainable development. Yet, little is known about the implementation of sustainable BMs (hereafter, SBMs). More in-depth research is needed on how business models-including SBMs-emerge, evolve, spread and are adopted to shape corporate sustainability development (e.g. industrial symbiosis network development). In the current research, we have developed a theoretical framework attempting to answer these research questions. We have validated the framework using extant case studies on industrial symbiosis (hereafter, IS) network development in the sugar industry, which entailed the transition of BMs to SBMs. The objective is to gain some new evidence-based theoretical insights into the dynamics, the processes, the selection mechanism and conditions for success underlying the implementation of SBMs to shape corporate sustainability development.
