Abstract One of the problems of the contemporary city is represented by the marked incommunicability among the citizens, who tend to isolate themselves physically to become part of the virtual friendly groups made possible by the increased power of communication gadgets. For this reason we are witnessing a marked loss of sense of the physical spaces of the city, already established because of other urban phenomena such as, for example, the replacement of the old inhabitants with the arrival of new citizens arrived for work or necessity. The loss of sense derives therefore from their lack of rootedness in the urban places with the consequent drastic decrease of the common sense of belonging. Perhaps a more appropriate use of ICT supports, proposed by the smart revolution underway in many of our cities, could concern, in addition to the consolidated sectors of energy saving and rationalization of mobility, the definition of new paradigms for a newfound use, healthy and shared, of urban spaces. The use of interactive totems located in strategic points of the city could give new citizens the opportunity to feel part of a common project, building a new urban identity. This would be achieved through the exchange of news and information between the administration and the citizens in which, the first, would provide information on available services but also historical and cultural information about spaces and places that are symbols of the city while, the second, could enter news about meetings, events, exhibitions organized by individuals and associations. This would be a new way to make the citizen feel part of a community rediscovering or discovering for the first time those values of collective memory that over time have crystallized in the spaces of the city.
