Abstract The smart city is an effectual and well-organized urban center that offers a great life quality to its residents through optimal energy management strategies involved in smart homes integrating Plug- in Electric Vehicles (PEVs). This concept has an important potential to flatten the peak load power evolution as well as to increase the energy efficiency in the existing smart city. In this context, a new home power supervision strategy with the coordinated PEV integration in a smart city is proposed. The aim of this study is to manage the charging/discharging periods of PEVs parked at homes to alleviate the load demand surplus for each home during rush hours by injecting power to homes (V2H technology) on the one hand, and, to fill valley during the lower-demand hours by absorbing power from homes (H2V technology) on the other hand. This supervision strategy determines the power reference charging/discharging amount for each PEV parked at home based on its start and end time parking, its initial and desired state of charge (SOC) at the scheduled time-period and its battery capacity. Obtained simulation results of the power load curve of such residential customers highlight that the large-scale integration of coordinated PEVs might benefit the smart homes through smoothing the power load profile, thus, increasing the stability of the studied city within the smart grid framework.
