Year 2019
Published
Abstract This paper investigates the project for the city by looking at one of the latest trends in urban planning: "the smart city". It starts with a general overview of the definitions of the term, explaining how the ascendance of information technologies and the associated focus on sustainability, as a response to globalization, urbanization and climate change, can generate effective territorial management planning strategies. Building on this objective, the authors review a smart city project within a consolidated and mature urban fabric in Italy, from three perspectives: territorial planning, technology, and social practices. The study consists of a detailed analysis of the contextual and typological configuration of the case and its surrounding area, narrating on the possible transformation of the territory. The results of the study lead the authors to argue that through this instance of enhanced reality, the potentialities for urban regeneration become apparent.
