Abstract There is an increasing concern at the global level to promote development in a comprehensive and equitable manner by taking into account several key factors such as climate change, extreme poverty and hunger, child mortality, environmental sustainability and universal primary education. This is why many stakeholders have made significant efforts to design and implement smart and sustainable development strategies in order to find smart solutions for global, regional and national problems. During the history, urbanization has represented a positive force that fostered the prosperity of human beings and contributed to the economic development. The paper aims to present the theoretical foundation of the concepts of smart city and sustainable development and to show their connection in the 21st century. To such end, the authors used a quantitative research method that explains these two concepts and seeks to validate their relationship. The concept of smart city has proved to represent both a useful tool and a successful way of thinking to address the unprecedented sustainability challenges of the 21st century. The paper shows that the connection between smart city and sustainable development has led to the emergence of a new concept: the smart and sustainable city.
