Abstract Deployed sensors in the smart city enable the smart mobility by managing flows of people, cars and goods. However, in the tourism scenario, when a large amount of sensors cannot be deployed in the environment, the user mobility can be performed by using cell traffic data of users equipped with mobile terminals, enabling the Smart Sightseeing. In this paper, we exploit the identification of the users' flow applied to the tourism. We discover the position information of tourists based on the activity performed through their mobile terminal (e.g. the smartphone), i.e. we localize the presence of the smartphone user in a given zone of the city. Then, we associate the tourist flows to the position of the monuments and other important attractions or events. In this way, local administrations can counteract high-density tourist areas and optimize tourism facilities.
