Abstract The Smart City Wien Framework Strategy (SCWFS) provides an inclusive vision for the long-term sustainable development of the city. Considering the sustainable energy development, SCWFS focuses on energy efficiency improvement, increasing the local generation of renewables and ensuring an ambitious GHG mitigation path. Using the optimisation framework MESSAGE, an optimal energy supply strategy up to 2050 has been formulated. The sustainable development scenario (SDS) shows a switch to clean fuel and increased electrification, resulting in a decrease in primary energy (PE) demand at an average annual rate of 0.9% from 41.7 TWh in 2016 to 30.3 TWh in 2050 corresponding to a total PE saving of 40% compared to the BAU scenario. The SDS results will achieve the set targets of SCWFS reflected in decreasing the final energy (FE) consumption per capita to 48% by 2050 compared to 2005, increasing the share of renewables in FE consumption to 73% by 2050, and doubling the share of renewable energy production within the city boundary by 2030 compare to 2005. The result of 1.86 tCO(2)/cap by 2030 is close to the set target of 1.76 tCO(2)/cap, whereas the 1.16 tCO(2)/cap fails to reach the set target of 0.53 tCO(2)/cap by 2050.
