Year 2014
Published
Abstract The main purpose of this paper is to illustrate the importance of the regional innovative clusters for the long-run sustainable competitive advantage and development of the region where they are acting. The first part of the paper is dedicated to a brief review of the existent literature in order to create the necessary background for debating the researched topic. Our main target for the first part of the paper is to identify based on the most relevant sources from the literature the defining characteristics of these creative & innovative regional clusters. In the second part of the paper, we focus on the development of the urban areas in order to identify the most important regional innovative clusters from our country, Romania. The focus is on the geographical and the sector distribution and structural analysis of the selected clusters. Regional innovative & creative clusters support mostly the "start-up companies" but also help the existing ones to develop ( by reducing input costs and by increasing the sales market, through the new opportunities offered by the creative and innovative clusters). They also allow the firms to use in a smart, efficient and effective way the local resources in order to develop their business rapidly and to maintain next the competitive advantage from the long-run perspective. As a general conclusion we consider that by taking into account the implications of the regional innovative and creative clusters mostly on the creative industries, it might have positive network externalities on the competitiveness and sustainability mostly for the local development of the smart, creative and innovative local communities. Therefore we have a strong believe that mostly for regions in the emergent countries like Romania we have to pay a greater importance to the role of the creative-innovative clusters within the socio and economic long run competitiveness and development.
