Abstract According to some business and political discourses, the smart city appears to be the city of the future. Nevertheless, opposed to this idyllic interpretation of the smart city, it can be proposed the concept of 'wise city': a citizen-centred model of the city in which the relationships between its inhabitants and the relation between citizen and space are stressed. By means of our analysis of several discourses on the city of Barcelona, this paper aims to provide both an insight into the discursive and ideological conflict regarding these two concepts of the city, and a deeper understanding of this problem in the context of Posthumanist thought on the city, globalization and new technologies.
