Abstract | In this paper we apply the Modern Portfolio Theory from Finance to assess how an in crement in the European renewable generation would affect the costs and risks of European power generation. We build our model using generation data detailed by country and generation technology for years 1995-2015. This information will be useful for us to calculate the maximum generation capacity for every country and technology, helping us to avoid unrealizable results of the model. Note that we are not using international power transport constraints as we want this work to highlight the strengths of the European renewable generation. To give the model some space, we include an additional technology (eventually, power storage) and we show how this technology interacts with the renewable generation as the latter increases its maximum generation capacity. For the considered models, we analyse in detail the composition of their minimum variance portfolios, as long as their concentration in terms of generation technologies and countries.. |
