Abstract In recent years several patterns of sustainable city have been outlined by researchers working in the fields of ecology, spatial planning, environment protection, architecture and landscape architecture. They stress the importance of nature in the urban environment where plants play the most crucial role if we talk about place development and welfare of its inhabitants. In order to make any place more sustainable and resilient, it becomes more important to follow the recommendations offered within EU Green Deal action or UN Sustainable Development Goals initiative. Although each country understands and deals with it differently, the changing climate more and more affects our cities which have expanded quite rapidly in the last decades. Urban environment is changing and we need to work with more complex scenarios to find the balance for all aspects of life taking into account the increasing number of population living in the cities and resources provided by nature to supply ecosystem services. People choose the place to live more often looking for both tangible economic benefit, social justice, and possibility to enjoy nature and to have access to clean air and water. Separate elements of the urban environment - plants, architecture, infrastructure, facilities or water - can be seen as stimulating or unnecessary depending on a pattern of the city. The most important thing is to revise the role of all mentioned elements in spatial planning priorities to provide or foster the growth of any place.
