Abstract | The Internet of Things (IoT) is one of the most important developments which will change not only businesses in many industries but also our personal life. In current literature, the technical aspects of IoT systems are dominant as they are the basic building blocks for new products, services and processes. Nevertheless, this is not enough to make IoT successful and sustainable in terms of user acceptance. Designing and implementing IoT systems is a novel and innovative endeavour. Besides technical aspects the user's point of view must be integrated in the design process at a very early stage. When it comes to the design of IoT systems the traditional process models for systems planning have some shortcomings, especially in the requirements engineering phase. In order to overcome this, we used the Design Science Research framework which is a well-known and accepted model that helps to create new and innovative systems as an exploration framework. The requirements engineering of IoT systems requires collaboration and cooperation between experts from different knowledge domains. ThinkLets, which is a specific type of collaboration patterns, were used to design and structure this highly interactive collaboration process. ThinkLets were then combined with the Design Science Research framework in order to define an environment which is eligible for this new kind of products and services. |
