Abstract Eurostat's statistics on science, technology and innovation cover a very important range of issues within the R & D program. This study is important in that it provides a concrete framework on the basis of the analysis, concluding that research is the foundation of the economic development of each and every EU Member State as well as the European Union as a whole. Expanding the role of research provides not only sustainable growth but also the protection of the international business environment. Using the data provided by Eurostat is also the place of each state in this field in the European Union. Being an extensive study on the role of research (science, inventions, innovations), a series of useful conclusions can be drawn for decision-making in the macroeconomic management of each country as well as at the level of the European Union. Funding research is a matter of utmost importance for each state, clearly resulting in those countries where funding is appropriate and economic outcomes are superior. Major European projects are based on concrete research results, which also provide for the sustainable development of the economy. The themes of evolution of science, innovation, and innovation occupy a broad scope of analysis for academics or researchers. The originality of this paper is that this represents a contribution in macroeconomic management, research and development occupy an important place. In this context, the results of this study represent a basis for analysis in order to make the necessary managerial decisions. The fact that there is a large discrepancy in funding for science, innovation and innovation is an important element in trying to wider cooperation within the European Union. The study can be expanded by using econometric methods and models to provide the parameters to underpin the decisions to be made.
