Abstract In today's knowledge driven, technology based and highly competitive business environment, the survival and growth of organizations largely depend on competencies of their human resources. Human resource competencies are regarded as one of the most important resources and the key to organizational success. Implementation of competence based policies, programs and strategies by organizations would facilitate judicious and optimum utilization of their resources, thereby, paving the way for sustainable competitive advantage. The identification, development and maintenance of desired human resource competencies can act as a catalyst for achieving the goals and objectives of an organization. The present study intends to summarize the concept of competence based human resource management and its related aspects primarily through a review of existing literature. The study established that properly designed and professionally implemented competence frameworks and models by organizations can enhance the selection, training and development, employee involvement, performance appraisal, compensation and career development processes to meet the needs and aspirations of both individuals and organizations. The study is believed to serve as a valuable tool for researchers to understand the current scenario of competence based human resource management on a single platform and take this research area forward. It is equally important for human resource managers and practitioners for the professional management and development of their personnel. Moreover, the study makes a significant contribution to the existing body of knowledge in the area of human resource management and organizational behaviour.
