Abstract | The following interview took place in November of 2009, during the international seminars "Paisaje y Territorio" held yearly by the School of Architecture and the Master's Program of the Faculty of Architecture, Art, and Design (FAAD) of Universidad Diego Portales. Anne Lacaton and her business partner talk about a unique way to approach Architecture and Landscape. This is due in great part to their experience in Nigeria, where they initiated their careers and lived for five years. They had to adapt to a completely different environment, which was in great need of new housing but lacking architects and funds. Back in France, they set up an office to apply their renewed ideas based on a sustainable model of their art in harmony with its surroundings. An economical approach became fundamental to them "no matter who is the property owner: the State, an individual, or a group of co-proprietors", Lacaton points out. The originality of this premise, which sounds obvious and un-poetic, is far from monumental and esthetic ambitions. The renovation of Tour Bois-Le-Pretre (2007), built in the 60s is one of their most interesting projects. They transformed the cheap apartments of the worn skyscraper in small villas with gardens. When faced with constructions like this, which are abundant in Europe, "you can't just say it is done with and you need to start everything over, because that is a mistake. This confuses the notion of Esthetics with that of Intelligence" (Lacaton). |
