Abstract Rural space is different from the other spaces by the following characteristics: basic professions, economic structure, density of construction and population, human relationships. Sustainable development in rural areas involves creating and sustaining a competitive social and economic environment, diversified, stable and healthy to ensure increased quality of life and economic growth. This development is in close correlation with the geography, infrastructure, business environment and demographics. An important role in achieving this sustainable development is the active participation of citizens, economic agents and public officials. All data related to climate, geology, hydrology, digital terrain model, demography, ways of communications, companies from the private and public sector are managed by Geographic Information System. This makes it suitable as an ideal tool for rural areas management in order to achieve sustainable development because it gives the possibility of analysis and correlation of high complexity, impossible to achieve efficiently using the database management programs.
