Abstract | The case examines a business venture, the arteBA fair, developed for social purposes by the Foundation arteBA. arteBA was considered the most prestigious contemporary art fair in Latin America. Its successful operation in the market contributed to fulfil the organizational mission linked to the support of artistic creation in the visual arts and the development of Argentinean art. The seventeenth edition contributed to reach a new record for the Foundation with 18,000 square feet of displays, 120,000 visitors and 81 art galleries. The case presents a central dilemma related to the proposal received of selling the fair. A foreign company that developed trade fairs worldwide was interested in arteBA. The dilemma of how to respond to the offer of sale, mobilized central issues in relation to the direction and future activities of the foundation. The case has been prepared to understand business ventures in Non-profit organizations (NPOs) and to analyse the concept of alignment between business ventures and social mission. |
