Abstract Purpose The purpose of the work is to determine the impact of digitalization on the sustainability of the economy and to justify its specificity in developed and developing countries. Design/methodology/approach The authors use the regression analysis method. Using this method, a multiple regression dependence of each stability indicator is established on a set of aspects of digitalization. Based on regression dependencies, simplex optimization is carried out. The top 10 developed and top 10 developing countries were selected as the objects for the study in the global IMD ranking by the value of the digital competitiveness index for 2019. Findings In developing countries, digitalization in general has a much more pronounced and extremely positive impact on sustainable development in all its manifestations. Digitalization of society and knowledge is key to sustainable development. Digital infrastructure is in second place, and digitalization of business and the state is the least important. In developed countries, digitalization had a controversial impact on sustainable development, contributing to faster economic growth, increased per capita GDP and sustainable development goals, but hampering global economic competitiveness. Digital infrastructure, digital society and knowledge are key to sustainable development, and the digitalization of business and the state needs to be limited. Originality/value Significant differences in the impact of digitalization on the sustainability of economic development in developed and developing countries are justified, proving the need to develop and implement separate management approaches in these categories of countries.
