Title Chemical and Biological Delignification Treatments from Blue Agave and Sorghum By-Products to Obtain Cellulose Nanocrystals
Year 2022
Published Waste And Biomass Valorization, 13, 2
Abstract Cellulose was obtained from blue agave bagasse fiber (ABF) and sorghum bagasse fiber (SBF) using the Phanerochaete chrysosporium TF9 strain and the chemical treatment for the delignification process. Fermentation of ABF and SBF with P. chrysosporium TF9 removed 70% and 64% of lignin, respectively; while the chemical delignification method removed 15% and 71% of lignin from ABF and SBF, respectively. The cellulose obtained by the biological delignification method showed higher values of crystallinity index than those obtained by the chemical delignification treatment. Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) obtained from both delignification treatments exhibited spherical structures with a diameter distribution of 10-50 nm and yields from 6.22 to 9.91%. Compared with the conventional chemical delignification process, the biological delignification treatment significantly reduced the loss of the crystalline fraction of cellulose during CNCs production. The obtention of cellulose fiber and nanocrystals from blue agave and sorghum agro-waste based on biological delignification contributes to a circular economy. [GRAPHICS]
