Donnan dialysis (DD) offers significant opportunities to improve contaminant removal and resource recovery from water and wastewater. Consuming low amounts of chemicals and energy, DD is a sustainable and forwardlooking technology. This review conducts a bibliometric analysis of 253 articles published between 1990 and 2023 to identify global research trends in DD. The study reveals key metrics such as publication patterns, most productive countries, authorships, influential articles, and keyword co-occurrence. Specific achievements in the DD field include the development of high-selectivity ion-exchange membranes and hybrid systems combining DD with other separation techniques. Current research directions emphasize nutrient recovery, membrane modification, and numerical analysis to optimize performance. The keyword analysis identified four distinct clusters: environmental applications, nutrient recovery, membrane modification, and modeling. Potential future research directions highlight the need for customized membranes and hybrid systems to tackle emerging contaminants and enhance DD efficiency. The integration of artificial intelligence is projected to accelerate these advancements, enabling more effective solutions for environmental remediation and biomolecule separation. This bibliometric analysis underscores the pivotal role of DD in shaping future research and its potential to address new challenges within the circular economy concept. |
