Abstract Black Soldier Fly Larvae (BSFL) play an important role in the ecological protection, nutrition security and circular economy, as they consume organic waste and convert it into insect biomass rich in proteins and lipids. Microemulsions (<100 nm) are popular in various fields because of their superior solubilization capacity, stability, transparency, and ease of preparation. Utilizing BSFL oil with great antioxidant properties to develop an oil-in-water (O/W) microemulsion system can release its potential applications. The objective of this research was to establish a method for creating BSFL O/W microemulsion systems through low-energy emulsification, investigate appropriate surfactants, and optimize the formulations. The findings revealed that polyoxyethylene hydrogenated castor oil (HCO-40) was the most effective surfactant, producing a microemulsion with uniform particle size distribution and low polydispersity index (PDI). The optimum surfactant to cosurfactant ratio (Km values) for various systems was determined to be 9:1, allowing for maximum BSFL oil content within the system. Furthermore, the BSFL O/W microemulsions exhibited good stability over a period of 60 days. These results provide valuable support for further exploration of BSFL oil in various applications.
