Title Assessing the mechanical properties of geopolymer recycled aggregate concrete: flexural strength, bond strength and thermo-mechanical behaviour

Abstract The recycling of construction and demolition wastes is important in the circular economy. Numerous studies have been carried out on recycled aggregate concrete (RAC). On the other hand, geopolymer is a promising binder which has less CO2 emission than Portland cement. However, the number of studies on geopolymer recycled aggregate concrete (GRAC) is still limited. This paper presents an assessment of different mechanical properties of GRAC. First, the compressive and flexural strengths of GRAC were presented. Then, the 4-point flexural strength and the bond strength between steel rebar and GRAC were determined. Finally, the thermo-mechanical behaviour of GRAC was investigated under different elevated temperatures (until 800 degrees C). The results showed that GRAC had higher bonding strength (2.3 times) than the referent cement concrete. When the exposed temperature increased (until 600 degrees C), the compressive strength of GRAC also increased; then, the compressive strength decreased at 800 degrees C. The scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) techniques were applied to analyze the micro-structure and the chemical compositions of the materials investigated.
