Title Biorefining sugarcane tops for cellulose, nano-silica, and biogas production

Abstract Sugarcane tops (SCT) are an abundant agricultural waste generated from post-harvest sugarcane residue. The collection and management of this field residue pose a significant challenge, resulting in its frequent burning in the field. The chemical composition of SCT is promising, with cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin, and silica, making it an attractive feedstock for various applications. In this context, the focus of the current study is to extract refined microcellulose (RMC) and nano-silica (NS) from SCT simultaneously, which has numerous applications in the pharmaceutical and other sectors. The extraction strategies were optimized and maximum yield of RMC of 0.324 g/g SCT and NS of 0.04 g/g SCT were achieved. Furthermore, wastewater generated in the process was treated by employing dark fermentation route to produce biohydrogen and biomethane along with volatile fatty acids, facilitating maximum resource recovery. The acidogenic fermentation process produced 3.74 L of biohydrogen and 6.75 g/L of fatty acids, while the methanogenesis process resulted 3.2 g/L of fatty acids and 1.9 L of biomethane production. Thus, this biorefinery approach enables holistic utilization of sugarcane tops in a circular economy framework.
