Abstract Among the concepts that have as object the understanding of material and energy flows in an industrial process, aiming at the adoption of sustainable practices, we highlight the Industrial Ecology, Cradle to Cradle and Circular Economy. In this sense, this article aims to verify the relationships between the concepts and characteristics of Industrial Ecology, Cradle to Cradle and Circular Economy, investigating the main differences and similarities between them. A theoretical essay was carried out, in which the concepts and characteristics were analyzed, in addition to conducting a search in the Scopus database, using the terms: "Circular Economy" and "Cradle to Cradle" and "Industrial Ecology". As a result, it was found that there is a relationship between the three concepts analyzed with regard to the analysis of material and energy flows in industrial processes, comprising the entire life cycle, from the product design stage to the reinsertion of the material back to the system.
