Abstract The paper aims to bring a better understanding of the WoodEMA society contribution to identification of the role of forests in the transition from linear to the circular economy. It is based on Woodema associated publications. Starting point of the work is understanding that the circular economy means an economy where raw materials and their value are employed as efficiently and wisely as possible. The objective is to create more income with fewer resources and in the most environmentally friendly way. The key issues discussed concern identification of new problems and solutions unlocking the potential of sustainable value chains for forest products. Among them are: stronger governance to ensure sustainable forest management and increase forest cover; tacking corruption and illegalities and strengthening tenure; creating an enabling environment for investments; put in place public policies which enhance markets for legal and sustainable wood; increase innovation and improve resource efficiency along the supply chain; increased awareness and marketing for sustainable wood; investment in science, research and technological innovation.
