Abstract Critical raw materials currently experienced a significant information boom within the European Union. It is not only because of their scarcity but mainly due to the fact that the European Union depends on their imports. This situation causes not only political pressures, but also needs to be discussed in the future, especially the way of covering many of the critical raw materials or assuring their compensation. These are the facts the recent H2020 projects, many challenges at national or regional level deal with. This situation causes that many scientists consider the idea of finding new technologies and searching for the way to be independent, to use economically unusable things by now, or to move constantly on within the unstoppable technological progress. One of these critical raw materials is high purity quartz. Its use is increasing year by year. It became indispensable mainly in the context of information technology but, more importantly, in the context of renewable energy. In particular, in the context of solar panels, the role of pure silicon is non-replaceable. The article discusses, describes, and also considers the future of the EU as ever more dependent society through the increasing and accelerating progress annually declaring growing percentage of the use of renewable energy sources, at the same time it forgets the increasing dependence on other countries where the reserves are also inexorably running out. Mainly these assumptions created a new phenomenon in the EU, so called circular economy which assumes and also believes that no waste material within the active exploitation of mineral resources will be wasted, but will be embedded in the next cycle and thus further actively exploited.
