Abstract |
The architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry comprises 30% of the extraction of resources and 25% of the solid waste. Studies have indicated that the adoption of sustainable techniques to lessen this environmental impact is being inhibited by demolition waste, the lack of standards, and software homogenization. This relates to the linear way of using resources, and practices such as circular economy (CE) could be a key driver to achieving sustainability. This paper presents the material passports (MPs) tool for implementing CE in the AEC industry. MPs can provide information about how to assess materials at different life-cycle phases and their reuse at their end-of-life (EOL). Thus, this paper explores frameworks for deconstruction information model (DIM)-based MPs within building information modeling (BIM). DIM-based MPs provide information to enhance efficient demolition while recognizing valuable materials at the EOL. To achieve this goal, a literature review was conducted to understand how BIM could enable the use of MPs and what attributes should be addressed. This study aims to contribute to the implementation of CE in the AEC industry by developing tools that will allow us to understand how to benefit from materials by lowering the exploitation of resources for future construction. |
