Abstract The paper presents the first step in a doctoral research project oriented toward improving the policy framework in Romania and Europe related to the environmental transformations of the manufacturing sector. A policy scanning is performed identifying the key provisions of the main strategic documents (for circular economy, bioeconomy and decarbonization). The studied documents are then analysed using a matrix diagram approach against four criteria relevant to their foreseen implementation in the field. The driving motive for this analysis is represented by the need to tailor the generic strategies in a way that reflects the current challenges of industrial companies. Although, there is a wide diversity of situations on European level, the aspects related to environmental policies tend to be similar in different countries due to the influence of European Commission directives. However, since environmental performance must be an integral part of competitiveness, these policies must allow room for improvement. The conclusions discuss the current gaps in the framework and the possibilities to reduce them.
