Abstract The current demolition practice requires enhancement to align with the principles of a circular economy. This can be accomplished by incorporating digital technologies, with BIM as the most favourable option for representing data on built assets. Challenges arise, particularly at the end of an asset's lifecycle, due to the absence of BIM models and limited interoperability. This paper presents a framework for demolition preparation based on asset digital representation, providing a concrete example of generating information requirements for a BIM model of a building to be demolished while ensuring interoperability throughout the process. It results in a specification of recyclable or reusable materials and products that can be integrated with online marketplaces, encouraging circular practices. Grounded in existing technological capabilities and international standards, the demonstrated framework allows immediate technological implementation and offers open and accessible application development, ensuring a low entry threshold for businesses.
