Abstract |
The plastics processing industry is one of the world's most energy-intensive industries. Therefore, the subject of energy efficiency and the resulting ecological effects have a special significance. Energy efficiency measures the machines, the supply structure and the process optimization. The influence of the processed plastic material on the energy demand hardly gets any attention. Instead, the selection of a type of plastic material depends on the product and the physical and chemical properties. However, the specific energy demand for processing the material and the ecological footprint are not yet a decision criterion for use. The present paper shows by means of an extensive experimental study, that the specific energy demand of an injection molding machine also depends on the processed material. For this purpose, a holistic experimental energy analysis is made and evaluated depending on the material used. The results show that the energy factor should be a decisive criterion for the future material selection process to achieve a more sustainable manufacturing. (C) 2019 The Authors.
