Abstract Plastic materials are of fundamental importance in the realization of manufactured articles of all kinds, and in multiple application areas. The main problem with these materials is their fate at the end of their life. Dispersion in the environment, or even solutions such as landfilling or use for energy generation should be avoided or overcome by recycling processes. Mechanical recycling, apart from the technological development of selection processes, has as its main limitation the fact that the second raw material obtained has generally inferior characteristics to virgin polymers, and therefore obliges to uses of lower value. Chemical recycling makes it possible to obtain the starting monomers-directly or through subsequent transformation processes-from plastic waste meant as raw material. Polymers obtained through the conversion of waste plastics are essentially indistinguishable in final properties from those obtained through the conversion of fossil-derived raw materials. Conversion plants of solid plastic waste (SPW) use a very heterogeneous raw material, whose characteristics must be studied taking into account both their heterogeneity and the conversion process, i.e., obtaining those compositional information necessary and useful to conduct the process in an optimal way both from the point of view of operational safety and of the final quality of the converted product. In the following paragraphs the main analytical techniques to obtain the most interesting compositional information are presented.
