Abstract |
The concept of Industry 4.0 develops from a technological base - a set of technologies with a profoundly transformative character. The development of the concept from an essentially manufacturing base to other domains - Services 4.0, Government 4.0, Tourism 4.0, etc. - tells us that the concept is now much broader in scope and has much broader transformative potential, both from an economic, social and an environmental sustainability point of view. In this context, multinationals may play a very important role, as these companies are considered to play a key role in promoting sustainable development. This study seeks to understand whether there is evidence that multinationals are playing this role by analyzing the literature published on Industry 4.0 and seeking to identify in the literature which is published on multinationals a bias towards a greater focus on environmental and social issues. The study conducted does not confirm this bias. The study shows that environmental and social issues are modestly present in the literature/research about Industry 4.0 but are no longer present in the specific literature on multinationals. The study thus challenges us to develop and implement research agendas on the topic and mobilize academia towards research in this domain. Such reorientation of research will be determinant to accelerate the implementation processes of Industry 4.0, exploring in an integrated way its transformative potential in the economic and technological dimensions, but also environmental and social. |
